Heat pump technology gains momentum in household applications

Brussels, 30 November 2009: Since heat pumps are at the core of several household appliances, CECED, the European household appliance manufacturers’ association, has created a new issue group to support further technological development for the use of renewable resources in the household.

Transport policy must be given higher priority, demands transport sector in joint letter to Commission President Barroso

Transport policy must be given a higher priority that reflects the importance of the sector’s contribution to the development of the European Union, Commission President José Manuel Barroso has been told by transport representatives. In a joint letter, nine transport organisations representing European the rail, road, air, inland waterway and maritime sectors, expressed their desire for a stronger and more comprehensive commitment to transport policy from the new Commission.

Copper industry completes Risk Assessment in anticipation of REACH regulation

Brussels, November 27th 2009: The European Copper Institute has launched a digital information toolkit to publicise the results of its recently approved EU risk assessment for copper. The tool kit, for use by the industry with its customers, employees, local regulators and communities, as well as by other stakeholders, positions the industry well to meet its obligations under the EU’s REACH regulation.

Implementing the Lisbon Treaty ‘Special Week’ coverage

CEN enlarges its membership

Brussels (26 November 2009) – The Extraordinary General Assembly of the European Committee of Standardization (CEN) on 25 November noted the positive recommendation from the CEN Administrative board and admits the full membership of the Croatian Standards Institute (HZN) which is effective as of 1 January 2010. This brings the total of CEN Members to 31: the 27 EU countries, 3 EFTA countries and Croatia.

CIAA messages in view of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen

The European food and drink industry, represented by CIAA, calls upon governments gathered at the UNFCCC COP-15 Conference in Copenhagen on 7 - 18 December 2009, to undertake all efforts to enable a legally binding, environmentally effective and globally equitable international agreement on climate change, covering the period 2013-2050. An ambitious agreement is needed to adequately address the dual global challenge of food security and climate change. EU industries are part of the solution to this challenge and require a level-playing-field at international level.

Undernutrition in health care and community care homes –
a key priority in the EU health strategy

Almost half of the patients in hospitals and even more in community care homes in Europe are malnourished or at risk of becoming malnourished. This is reported by the NutritionDay project that determined the nutritional status of more than 70,000 individuals in hospitals and in community care accross Europe. Undernutrition in the elderly and chronically ill is a health problem at the level of obesity in the young and middle aged.
