Getting professional drivers back on the road after the economic crisis

IRU Seminar highlights that a stronger focus on skills and an improved image for the sector are needed to attract drivers and support economic recovery.

Brussels – The IRU seminar on “Image and Employment in Road Transport” today brought together some 100 representatives of road transport associations, transport professionals, recruitment and training experts from Europe, CIS countries and the Middle East to exchange best practices for improving the image, recruitment and retention of drivers in the road transport sector.

Biodiversity on the Brink - BirdLife’s photo exhibition to launch the International Year of Biodiversity

26 January 2010, Brussels – Officially launching the International Year of Biodiversity, BirdLife International [1] presented “Biodiversity on the Brink”, a photo exhibition of Europe’s natural wonders. At a well attended event in the European Parliament, guests enjoyed 15 astonishing pictures of European landscapes, animals and human activities, learning more about the threats our nature is facing, but also about the opportunities to save it.

Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association calls on European Commission not to authorize sugar exports above WTO ceiling

São Paulo, January 25, 2010 – In a letter sent today to Commissioner for Agriculture Mariann Fischer Boel, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) called on the European Commission to stick with its commitment, assumed at the World Trade Organization (WTO), and not allow European exports of sugar above the ceiling of 1.374 million tonnes.

Charging trucks for pollution will benefit the economy

A new report has shown that EU plans to charge road vehicles for the damage they do to the environment would have a positive effect on the economy, despite claims from opponents who argue the costs of such a policy would be too high. The researchers conclude that “the overall benefits of charging for external costs outweigh the limited negative price impacts on individual transport operators.” Indeed, the expected net benefit for the European economy amounts to EUR 2.3 billion a year – very good news for an economy shaken by the economic crisis […]

Malta’s Right to a Spring-hunting Derogation

We deplore the arrogant attempt by BirdLife Malta and their parent organization and partners to intimidate the Maltese Prime Minister, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi. We trust that Dr Gonzi will rise to the occasion and resist this unjust pressure from an organization that plainly considers itself to be above the law. This time, the Maltese government has the backing of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), as well as the total support of the hunting organizations and all the law-abiding hunters and their families.
