IRU appoints Igor Rounov as Under Secretary General

The IRU Presidential Executive has appointed Igor Rounov as IRU Under Secretary General responsible for the IRU Permanent Delegation to the Euro-Asian Region to act more effectively in an ever changing world.

Geneva – The IRU Presidential Executive is pleased to announce that it has, pursuant to the recommendation of IRU President Janusz Lacny, unanimously decided to appoint Mr. Igor Rounov to the post of IRU Under Secretary General, after 8 years of highly successful management of the IRU Permanent Delegation to the CIS region.

Brussels 26 February 2010 – Today, the Alliance for a Competitive European Industry (ACEI)
has called for a new industrial partnership between the EU and its major industries. In its
Manifesto, entitled “Shifting Gears for a New Industrial Policy”, the ACEI stresses what needs
to be done so that manufacturing industry can remain one of the engines of the economy.
The presentation comes ahead the meeting of the Competitiveness Council on 1-2 March on
industrial policy.

The 31.12.2010 is approaching: by this date all EU member States have to open all postal services to competition, with the exception of those countries applying for derogation until the end of 2012. This deadline is pushing several national operators to accelerate their internal restructuring, by closing sectors providing universal services and developing the financial business of postal service providers.

The reform of the Common Fisheries Policy must support small scale fisheries. This was the clear message from ALDE MEPs during a debate in the European Parliament in Brussels today.

ANEC is dismayed – but not surprised – at the apparent failure of the HOTREC initiative intended to introduce a voluntary charter for hotel fire safety in Europe.  If confirmed, the failure will prove that a common minimum level of fire safety cannot be achieved by self-regulation.

Women suffering from male negligence

The economic crisis is affecting women more than men. This was the message from a public hearing hosted today by the GUE/NGL group and Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chair, Swedish MEP Eva-Britt Svensson.

"Women are now bearing the brunt of neoliberal policies and the careless mishandling of the banking and financial sector by men" Svensson said opening the seminar. "At the same time all the taxpayer-funded aid measures are going to the male-dominated sectors, such as the car industry."
