Statement by FIA Region I on landmark European Court of Justice ruling on ATU and Carglass vs Fiat Chrsyler

Brussels, 5 October 2023 – The FIA Region I warmly welcomes the recent ruling by the  European Court of Justice regarding access to in-vehicle data by independent repairers. This  landmark judgment unequivocally reinforces our long-standing position that security  gateways implemented by vehicle manufacturers under the pretext of cybersecurity are not  only unfair and disproportional but also incompatible with EU legislation.

S&D: New Schengen rules will stop free movement from being used as a political football

Today, the European Parliament confirmed its mandate on the revision of the Schengen Borders Code – the rules governing free movement in the EU. With the Socialists and Democrats leading the negotiations in the civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee, the introduction of internal border controls will only be possible under exceptional circumstances: the reasons must be justified and there is a strict time limit of a maximum duration of 18 months.

S&Ds pushed for final agreement to phase out climate damaging fluorinated gases

Today, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission have concluded negotiations to reduce fluorinated gases’ (F-gases) emissions. These gases are up to 25,000 times more climate damaging than CO2, hence their reduction is key to prevent worsening global warming.

Following Azerbaijan’s military seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh, the European Parliament is set to adopt a strong resolution today condemning Baku’s unjustified attack against the mountainous South Caucasus enclave. As requested by the Socialists and Democrats, the Parliament is calling on the EU to comprehensively review its relations with Baku. The EU should suspend the negotiations on a new EU-Azerbaijan agreement, and reduce EU dependency towards Azerbaijan gas exports.

Negotiations on EU asylum reform ready to move ahead

Today, member states found agreement on their position on the crisis regulation that had blocked progress on negotiations between the Parliament and the Council on the Migration and Asylum Pact. With this development, negotiations on all aspects of EU asylum reform can take place, including solidarity and the fair sharing of responsibility between EU member states.

Tomorrow, the European Parliament is set to adopt a new EU law on European Green Bonds to put an end to greenwashing practices in this rapidly growing market. In the negotiations, led by our MEP Paul Tang, the Socialists and Democrats secured a deal that will achieve transparency and guarantee truly green investments for investors.
