Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA):ETNO welcomes increased transparency but remains concerned over substance

BRUSSELS – ETNO is pleased that widespread concerns over the lack of transparency of the ACTA negotiation process have finally been heard and the documents have now been released. Nonetheless, concerns remain over certain provisions.

"We welcome the fact that the negotiators have acknowledged the need for transparency after two years of negotiations and hope this will be the case until the conclusion of the negotiations. However, concerns over substance remain”, said Michael Bartholomew, ETNO Director. 

Energy efficiency: Stakeholder coalition calls for financial framework

EuroCommerce welcomes competition exemption for small retailers

EuroCommerce welcomes the revision of the 10 year old block exemption regulation (BER)[1] on vertical restraints. This regulation and its accompanying guidelines have proven beneficial to companies by providing a legal framework which is more predictable and understandable. EuroCommerce agrees that it was necessary to continue on the same route. Nevertheless, EuroCommerce has some reservations on the detail of the regulation and guidelines. 

Volcano cloud: Europe's aerospace industry deeply involved in seeking a swift and safe resolution to flight disruption

Brussels, 21 April 2010 – Several European aerospace companies have offered their assistance to public authorities to evaluate the impact of volcanic ash on aircraft systems and engines. ASD, the association representing the European aerospace and defence industries, is currently assessing the consequences of the volcano ash crisis on the aerospace industry’s activities in Europe.

An increasing number of Member States levy CO2-based taxation or incentivise electric vehicles

Brussels, 21/04/2010 - At present, seventeen EU Member States levy
CO2-related taxes on passenger cars. Fifteen governments provide tax
incentives for electrically chargeable vehicles. In 2009, motor vehicle
taxes in the EU 15 amounted to €377 billion or 3.4% of GDP.

Citizens deserve better - EU budget transparency standards just not good enough

Defending citizens' right to information on how their tax money is being spent today in the European Parliament debate on the EU budget, Danish GUE/NGL MEP Søren Søndergaard said MEPs have the responsibility to reject EU institution accounting practices until levels of transparency are improved. 

ETNO welcomes the Granada Declaration which calls for high speed networks investment to be priority in forthcoming Digital Agenda

BRUSSELS – ETNO welcomes the recognition by telecoms ministers and the Commission of the need to address the lack of investment in high speed broadband infrastructure and boost private investment. 

“The eruption of the Icelandic volcano and the closure of the airspace brought a new demonstration of the key importance of high speed broadband infrastructure and applications, for instance through an increased use of video-conferencing systems, for the economy and society as a whole”, says Michael Bartholomew, ETNO Director. 

Commission Work Programme 2010 - inaction veiled in rhetoric

Reacting to Barroso's presentation of the Commission’s work programme to Parliament, Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Miguel Portas said the title of the programme document "Time to Act" was evidence of an effort to hide indolence behind a mountain of words.

"Now is the time to act?! Why hasn't the Commission acted already?" Portas demanded, going on to point out the gap between Commission rhetoric and policy.
