ALDE vote against nonsensical legislation for self employed drivers

The European Parliament voted today on a controversial proposal concerning the organisation of the working time of persons performing mobile road transport activities. The debate boiled down to one issue: the inclusion or not of self employed drivers in the working time directive and in the end the European Parliament voted to include them. ALDE agrees with the European Commission that including them in legislation would be unworkable.

European Parliament working time vote endangers EU jobs and entrepreneurship

EP rejects dangerous Commission proposal on working time for truckers

Welcoming the European Parliament vote on the Bauer report on working time for road transport workers, Portuguese GUE/NGL MEP Ilda Figueiredo said the Commission's proposals would have undermined safety on European roads and was based on the false assumption that allowing self-employed truckers to work up to 86 hours per week would not have a negative impact on road safety.

Vote result: 368 in favour of rejection of the Commission proposal, 301 against, 8 abstentions

Left attacks brutal EU/IMF austerity in EP debate

Criticizing the measures taken by the EU in response to the crisis in advance of tomorrow's Council Summit in Brussels, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky explained the key elements of the left's proposal to Commission President Barroso today in the European Parliament.

"Europe urgently needs a social-ecological investment program to overcome the crisis, decisive measures to break the power of financial markets and more economic democracy in the interests of wage earners" he said.
