EuroCommerce deplores misconceptions in report on food supply chain. 

EuroCommerce deeply regrets the European Parliament’s adoption in plenary of the report by MEP José Bové (Greens/EFA, France), on the food supply chain . “Although we see some improvements compared to the initial draft report, we regret that a number of misconceptions about the food supply chain – and retail in particular – remain”, said EuroCommerce Secretary General, Xavier Durieu.

FEDSA Appoints New Head for EU Lobby

FeDSA has appointed Maurits Bruggink as its new Executive Director.  He will be responsible for spearheading the industry’s EU lobby, which is at a critical stage with the replacement of the 1985 Direct Selling Directive.  He will manage the FeDSA office in Brussels and report to FeDSA’s Chairman Philippe Jacquelinet, CEO of French company Captain Tortue.

European Health Forum Gastein nominates Finalists for top-class Health Award

European Health Award 2010: smoke-free classes, Parkinson’s in everyday life, alcohol prevention and cross-border hospital cooperation among the nominated projects

Six cross-border health projects in areas such as smoking, alcohol prevention, organisation of health care in border regions or chronic diseases were now nominated for the short list of the European Health Award 2010 from which a jury will choose the winning project. The top-class award will be awarded for health initiatives at the European Health Forum Gastein in October.

EU Finance Ministers must support taxes on banks and financial transactions

On Tuesday 7th September 2010, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) will meet to attempt to agree on a common EU position on a tax on financial transactions and on bank levies.

The Europeans For Financial Reform (EFFR) call on ECOFIN to ignore a paper drafted by Algirdas Semetas, European commissioner for tax affairs, dismissing the feasibility of European Transaction tax.

Water Footprint & Water Stewardship

Brussels, 3 September 2010. Yvo de Boer, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, will give the opening keynote address at a seminar on the Water Footprint and Water Stewardship, co-organized by the European Water Partnership (EWP) on 9 September in Brussels. No to Stuttgart 21 - GUE/NGL MEPs back mass campaign to stop waste and environmental destruction

Supporting today's demonstration against the Stuttgart 21 project to replace the main railway station in Stuttgart, Germany, with a new underground station, German MEP Sabine Wils has called for an immediate halt to the project and its use of EU funds.

The Stuttgart 21 project involves the construction of a new high speed train station at the city's airport and 30km of tunnels. The project is linked to a speculative redevelopment of the city centre and is opposed by the majority of people in Stuttgart as a waste of money and an environmental hazard.

ALDE: deal establishing European financial supervision a big step forward

In the final deal agreed in principle today, Council agreed with ALDE's key demand (supported by the main political groups of Parliament) that the President of the European Central Bank be also the President of the new European Systemic Risk Board - to be reviewed after five years. This body will be charged with identifying risks to financial stability and have the power to issue warnings and recommendations to avoid trouble in the future.

EIM has a new President and Executive Director

Brussels – The association of European Rail Infrastructure Managers (EIM) has from 1 September 2010 a new President: Hubert du Mesnil, President of the French Infrastructure Manager Réseau Ferré de France. At the same time, Hendrik Abma takes over as the new Executive Director of EIM.

EIM’s new President Hubert du Mesnil said: “Infrastructure Managers must work hand in hand to ensure operational, economic, and environmental performance of our European network. This is the top priority for EIM.”
