Cable Europe statement on European Commission’s requests to end French & Spanish 'telecoms taxes'

The European Commission made a formal request this week for Spain and France to end “telecoms taxes” which were introduced to compensate for a loss of revenue from public TV channels. We do not just warmly welcome this move – we heartily cheer it. The Commission has made a clear demonstration to not just two Member States but to all of Europe that it takes better regulation seriously by expecting it from its constituent countries. The EU today also rejected the reflex to place the burden of one segment of business on another through a dubious tax measure.

Verhofstadt on Roma issue: ALDE will closely monitor Commission action

Today the Commission announced the opening of an infringement procedure against France for not fully implementing the 2004 Directive on Free Movement. In the case of France, the government has to come forward with its transposition measures and a detailed schedule by 15 October.

In reaction to the remarks by Commissioner Reding two weeks ago, France already withdrew its 'circulaire' in which the Roma were specifically discriminated. Now France has to prove in practice that it has stopped discriminatory policy as well.

European Standardization Organizations renew their participation in the European Innovation Summit

The European Commission is currently considering the question of eligibility of carbon credits for use in the third period of the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) from 2013. The European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET)1 welcomes the Commission’s invitation to contribute to this debate.
