Multiple sclerosis: Quality of care should not depend on place of residence – Experts call for benchmarks

More than 500,000 people in Europe are living with multiple sclerosis. Today, experts at the European Health Forum Gastein discussed the quality of care which varies greatly across the EU despite progress in modern treatment strategies. Policy steps suggested include creation of uniform standards and certification of specialty nursing.

EU policy-makers call for urgent action to halt the growing epidemic of chronic respiratory diseases

Chronic respiratory system diseases cost European economies more than €102 billion annually. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) alone leads to annual costs of more than €50 billion, and the trend is increasing. Experts at the European Health Forum Gastein complain of an epidemic that is frequently underestimated.  Up to 75 percent of those afflicted with COPD never get diagnosed, foregoing the potential benefit of appropriate treatment.

Austrian Health Minister Stöger at EHFG opening: Ensuring solidarity in the financing of healthcare systems

The ability to finance health care systems in Europe in the wake of the crisis has to be safeguarded.  A rationing of health services is not an appropriate answer to economic contraints, Austrian Minister of Health Alois Stöger said today at the at the opening of the 13th European Health Forum Gastein. Demographic developments and rising life expectancy are wrongly estimated to be significant cost drivers, according to the Minister.  A strategic approach: prevention in place of repair medicine.

EHFG President Leiner: Decentralized decision-making structures slowing down health care reform

The 13th European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) opened today in Bad Hofgastein. Discussions at the congress will center on the future of European health care systems. EHFG President Leiner criticized that decentralized and federalist decision-making structures often pose barriers to health care system reform. A system structured around small hospitals is problematic in terms of cost and quality.

EU Agency analysis of ‘Stuxnet’ malware: a paradigm shift in threats and Critical Information Infrastructure Protection.

The EU ‘cyber security’ Agency ENISA, i.e. the European Network and Information Security Agency, has produced an initial comment and brief, high level analysis of the recent ‘Stuxnet’ attacks; on its importance, and its technical implications for Europe. The Agency considers ‘Stuxnet’ a paradigm shift, and warns that similar attacks may occur. It argues that Europe should reconsider its protection measures for Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP).

Europe’s food and drink industry welcomes the EU’s Innovation Strategy Communication, a flagship 2020 initiative designed to stimulate competitiveness and growth across the EU.

Effective R&D and innovation are drivers of growth in Europe’s food and drink industry, which is the single largest manufacturing sector in Europe (using 70% of EU agricultural production; with a turnover of 965 billion euro; and providing direct employment for 4.4 million people). However, across Europe, investment in R&D represents only 0.37% of food and drink output – lower than in other developed countries such as the US and Japan.

President of Senegal pledges support for sector

The First African Public Transport Congress & Exhibition, held in Dakar, Senegal, from 3 to 7 October and organised by the African Association of Public Transport (UATP) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), closes its doors today, with extremely positive messages for the development of new infrastructure in Africa and a call for foreign investment. The President of the Republic of Senegal His Excellency Abdoulaye Wade used the occasion to pledge his support for public transport.

ALDE urges visa-free travel for citizens of Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina

The European Parliament has voted by an overwhelming majority to approve a European Commission proposal to grant visa-free travel to the EU's Schengen zone for nationals of Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Most EU states plus 3 non-EU states belong to Schengen. The decision now passes to the Council of Ministers.
