New data: Unforeseen hurdles can increase European inequalities in access to optimal care for patients with rare cancers

Previously underestimated hurdles such as exchange rate fluctuations and their impact on prices of new medicines may limit the access of patients with rare cancers to effective treatments, experts said at the European Health Forum Gastein. A new study recommends that EU and national authorities address this issue proactively when designing regulatory frameworks for pricing and reimbursement of medicines.

Old age poverty risk: Every fifth person over the age of 65 risks poverty and in some countries more than half the population is at risk. EHFG-President Leiner is calling for European adjustment funds to help assure an aging process in dignity, irrespective of one’s area of residence.  EHFG board member Pirich advocates blanket palliative care throughout Europe.   

HEIDI delivers transparent health information for Europe

Bad Hofgastein, October 6, 2010 – The Directorate General of Health and Consumers of the EU Commission is developing a completely new type of mechanism for health information in Europe. Its developers refer to it as a new health Wikipedia, but it actually goes under the more sonorous name of HEIDI (Health in Europe Information and Data Interface). Experts discussed it today at the European Health Forum Gastein, presenting the current state of progress of this ambitious project for the first time in public and talking about the needs and comments of future users.

Today, in a number of European countries, infertility patients are still limited in their choice for medically assisted reproduction treatment, experts criticized at the European Health Forum Gastein.
