WORLD STANDARDS DAY, 14 October 2010

Every year on 14 October, we celebrate World Standards Day. This annual celebration of standardisers worldwide pays tribute to the work of millions of experts who endeavour to make life safer. The day was initially promoted by International Standards Organizations (ISO, IEC & ITU), but is also recognised and celebrated by regional and national standards makers in a show of cross-boundary cooperation to enhance technical harmonization.

ALDE successful in calling the Commission to report to Parliament on Roma databases, discrimination and free movement in France and in the EU

The ALDE group's request to call for the European Commission to come to Parliament for next week's parliamentary session has been accepted today by the Conference of Presidents.

EU President Van Rompuy and Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga, President of Caritas Internationalis, met to share the objective of Zero Poverty

Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga met Mr. Van Rompuy today to convey the political proposal to fight poverty designed by Caritas organizations in Europe in the framework of the Zero Poverty campaign.

During the meeting Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga presented Caritas as the best partner for the EU to effectively combat poverty. The network is present from field projects with the people living in poverty to high-level advocacy spheres. This is possible thanks the thousands of volunteers and Caritas staff working together against poverty in the world.

ETNO and UNI Europa outline good practices in the telecoms sector on how to improve the mental well-being of workers

BRUSSELS – The Good Work Good Health conference was hosted by European social dialogue telecom partners, ETNO and UNI Europa today. They presented Good Practice Guidelines on how to improve the mental well-being of workers in the sector. The study was carried out by the Institute of Occupational Medicine for ETNO and UNI Europe, the two parties among Europe’s leading telecommunications network operators.

 

Regulated online gaming industry calls for full EU harmonisation

European Conference for Water experts, 14th October 2010

EUREAU holds  under the Belgian Presidency and with the help of Belgaqua, a European Conference on “Climate Change and Water: a common challenge” on 14 October 2010 in Brussels. More than 200 participants have confirmed their presence; experts in the water sector as well as Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Trio Presidency will take part on this conference.

Open debate on Kashmir at the EP

Despite the tension between India and Pakistan, a constructive dialogue on the Kashmir issue is possible. That was the overall result of a hearing organised by the ALDE group this afternoon at the European Parliament. The panel that assembled representatives from Pakistan, India, supporters of an independent Kashmir and liberal members of the EP discussed both the history of the conflict and possible future approaches towards a solution, including ideas for more involvement by the European Union.
