Healthy food is good for the environment, finds major think tank study

Brussels, Oct.12 2010/PRNewswire/ -- A healthy diet also benefits the environment, according to a scientific study presented in Brussels today by the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN).

The study ‘Double Pyramid: Healthy Food for people, sustainable food for the planet’ indicates that foods with higher recommended consumption levels are also those with lower environmental impact. Contrarily, those foods with lower recommended consumption levels are also those with higher environmental impact.

Baby walkers: new joint position statement illuminates continued risks

The European Child Safety Alliance and ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardization, have released a joint position statement and background paper about the risk of injuries to young children caused by baby walkers. The position statement is endorsed and supported by ECSA and ANEC country partners, representing expert organizations from over 30 EU countries coming together to state concern about the risk of severe injuries caused by this unnecessary product.

EU Transport Ministers increase road freight transport taxes without removing externalities!

EU Transport Ministers reached a political agreement on the Eurovignette, paving the way for extra taxes to allegedly internalise external costs in road freight transport yet with no guarantee that externalities will be effectively reduced.

The European rail industry welcomes the agreement reached today by European transport ministers to permit the charging of some of the internalisation of external costs through the revision of the ‘Eurovignette’ directive on the charging of heavy good vehicles. The revision of the Eurovignette Directive is a further step towards levelling the playing field for all modes of transport.

This is the main conclusion reached at the workshop organised by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) European Bureau on the 14th of October 2010 concerning Anti–lock Braking Systems (ABS) for motorcycles. ABS has proven to be the most effective of the recent braking systems, not only in terms of reducing the emergency braking distance, but also in terms of improving driving stability during braking.

ETNO raises concern about a new tax on Hungarian telecoms sector

Brussels – ETNO, the European Telecommunications Network Operators’ association, is concerned by the announcement by the Hungarian Government of a possible three-year tax of ?220 million per year to be imposed on the telecommunications sector to bring Hungary’s budget deficit in line with European Union (EU) rules next year.
