EU must act on containers lost at sea and agree a more coherent maritime strategy

ALDE MEP Gesine Meissner (FDP, Germany), Rapporteur on Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP) whose report was adopted in the European Parliament this morning drew attention to the vast number of containers lost at sea from commercial shipping and the potential damage they are presenting both to the environment and to other shipping.

Following a key-debate on the G20 summit and economical and financial issues the European Parliament adopted today by a large majority (501 +/ 76 -) the interim report on the lessons learned from the financial crisis.

The disregard of the Council hitherto to the demands of the European Parliament on the 2011 Budget is worrying.  The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe understands the budgetary difficulties which member states are struggling with, but considers that its vision for the 2011 budget is reasonable and justified which will be born out in negotiations seeking to reconcile to the two positions.
