Socialist PMs call EU Economic Governance plans a ‘Blueprint for Austerity’

The Prime Ministers of the Party of European Socialists (PES) will use today’s European Council meeting to call for a more balanced system of Economic Governance. We call on the European Council to deliver a more balanced economic message than simply ‘austerity, cuts and sanctions’. We need greater budgetary discipline but also measures and instruments to promote jobs and growth. Our reaction comes as the Economic Governance Task Force, chaired by the European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, tabled its final report to the European Council meeting.

CEEP: Public services are key to enter the road to growth

This was the key messages that Carl Cederschiöld, President of CEEP, presented at the Tripartite Social Summit today in Brussels. The Summit was primarily devoted to economic governance ahead of the European Council discussions on this issue.

In his intervention, Cederschiöld also emphasised the need for selectivity in implementing necessary fiscal consolidation measures. “Simply just reducing public expenditure will not only have a negative impact on public services, but also on the growth and recovery in many other sectors.”

BRUSSELS, Belgium (26th October, 2010) – The European Commission has marked the 20th Anni-versary of the European Association for REsearch on SERvices (RESER) with a joint workshop to explore whether service industries are equipped to better survive the current global economic crisis than other sectors of the economy. By invitation of the Ministry of Economic Affairs the workshop took place in the Premises of Representation of Baden-Württemberg at the European Union.

CEEP welcomes Single Market Act with reservations on service concessions

CEEP welcomes the Single Market Act aimed at revamping this key project of the EU. Ralf Resch, General Secretary of CEEP said, “It is good that now a rebalancing can take place. People were tired of the Single Market because they felt the prevailing of economic considerations over the social dimension of the EU as a threat. This threatened the Single Market itself”. Resch continued: “It is certainly a good start to first identify the disease before prescribing the medicine”.

28 October: EPP leaders to meet at Party Summit ahead of the European Council

Brussels, 26 October 2010

The EU heads of state and government of the European People’s Party (EPP), along with the Presidents of the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament - Herman VAN ROMPUY, Jose Manuel BARROSO, and Jerzy BUZEK - will meet on 28 October in Meise (Brussels) for the Statutory Summit of the Party.

Wilfried MARTENS, the President of the EPP, will host the Party Summit. EPP Secretary General Antonio LOPEZ-ISTURIZ and the members of the EPP Presidency will be attending.
