Agency work contributes to work mobility by securing upwards transitions Agency work helps young people to enter and progress through the labour market

Brussels, 17 November 2010; In response to the EU’s celebration of Job Mobility Day, and its focus on the plight of young people entering the workplace, Eurociett emphasises the role that agency work plays in facilitating job mobility though upwards transitions in the labour market.

“59%* of workers in the agency sector are aged below thirty, and for many of them, our industry is their first experience of the workplace” explained Denis Pennel, managing director of Eurociett, the voice of private employment agencies in Europe.

5th Report on Cohesion: AER: “It is a good start, and we are ready for further negotiations”

The Assembly of European Regions (AER) took part today in a round table with Commissioner Johannes Hahn on the 5th Report on Cohesion, organised by the Committee of the Regions. AER is globally satisfied with the report’s conclusions, as a good basis for future discussions. It recalls the main principles of cohesion policy, in particular its mission as a policy for all Europeans to overcome challenges ahead and participate in building tomorrow’s Europe. However, even though partnership remains a founding principle, Regions are still not involved as full partners.

CEEP: economic reforms are the way forward, public services work for growth

This was the key message that Ralf Resch, General Secretary of CEEP, presented at the Macro Economic Dialogue at political level meeting taking place today in Brussels. The meeting was primarily devoted to the current economic situation and how to restore employment and growth.

In his intervention, Mr Resch emphasised that the crisis has accelerated efforts to strengthen the EU’s economic governance. CEEP welcomes this and the fact that macro-economic developments have gained greater prominence.

GUE/NGL supports Parliament's position in deadlocked budget negotiations

Negotiations between the European Council and the European Parliament on the 2011 budget and on political guarantees for the future of European policies deadlocked completely last night.

The reason why these negotiations failed is that some governments maintained their refusal to debate future-related aspects, despite the previous agreement by the Council Presidency to put it on the agenda.   

Guy Verhofstadt on budget 2011: it is not about figures but about the future

Last night, the negotiations between European Parliament, Council and Commission on the budget 2011 ended without agreement. This means the European Union will have no budget for 2011 and will proceed with provisional twelfths. Although the European Parliament agreed for its part on lowering the growth figures of the budget to 2,91%, the Council refused to meet us halfway in agreeing on the political demands of the Parliament.

EuropaBio Responds to the Eurobarometer on Biotechnology 2010

The European Commission’s Eurobarometer on public perceptions of life sciences and biotechnology, released on November 11th, indicated that confidence and optimism are on the rise.

The survey, conducted in February of this year, showed that 80% of Europeans are in favour of or are unopposed to biotechnology.  However, findings also highlighted that Europeans are still hungry for facts and communication about the technology.

On the draft Energy Infrastructure Package. Europe needs heating and cooling networks

With a view to the imminent publication of the Energy Infrastructure Package, Euroheat & Power urges the European Commission to ensure coherence with the recently published Energy Strategy 2020, by including reference to and support for the establishment of district heating and cooling networks. The strategy rightly points out under Priority 1 that “efforts are needed to substantially increase the uptake of high efficiency cogeneration, district heating and cooling.’’

Over three-quarters of imported lighter models on the European market are potentially dangerous. The Decision of the European Commission on the safety of lighters is still not being respected.
