Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA): Europe’s e-communications providers call on the European Commission to reflect EP demand for ACTA not to modify the EU acquis

BRUSSELS – Europe’s leading e-communications service providers welcome the efforts of both the European Parliament and the Commission to address concerns regarding the potentially negative impact of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement on the EU citizens’ rights and on the existing balance between IPR enforcement and user’s privacy.

ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardisation, welcomes the EU decision to ban bisphenol A from baby bottles

Stephen Russell, ANEC Secretary-General, reacted: "ANEC congratulates the European Commission on its decision to ban this hazardous chemical from baby bottles. We will monitor the implementation of the ban and urge the Commission to resource joint market surveillance actions among Member States to strengthen enforcement in order to help ensure that no baby bottles containing bisphenol A remain on the European market after 1 June 2011”.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT REPORT ON PUBLIC BROADCASTING: COMMERCIAL TV CALLS FOR MORE TRANSPARENCY

Brussels, 25 November 2010 – The Association of Commercial Television in Europe (ACT) welcomes the adoption of the non-binding, own-initiative resolution based on a report by Ivo Belet MEP on “Public service broadcasting in the digital era: the future of the dual system”. The co-existence of public and commercial broadcasters has so far ensured a great variety of choice to European citizens as well as the freedom of expression European media need in today’s challenging environment.

MEPS PUSH FOR SUSTAINABLE EUROPEAN ENERGY STRATEGY

Today MEPs voted in favour of a comprehensive 10-year energy strategy for the European Union which highlights the importance of renewables and energy efficiency while maintaining a strong focus on competition and market issues.

Jens Rohde MEP (Denmark, Venstre), who negotiated the proposals on behalf of ALDE, said:

On the initiative of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, the European Parliament meeting in the Strasbourg plenary session solemnly called for an active inter-institutional cooperation in view of getting an ambitious and rapid agreement on the 2011 budget.  This agreement should be based on reciprocal commitments made by the Commission, the Council, and the Parliament, to prepare the groundwork together for the revision of the next round of the multi-annual financial framework and the provision of the post-2013 EU budget by new own resources.

MEPS SPEAK OUT ON DETERIORATING SITUATION IN WESTERN SAHARA

MEPs have expressed their growing concerns about the significantly deteriorating situation in Western Sahara and condemned recent violent incidents in protest camps during which a still unknown number of people were killed or injured.

EP calls for more action ahead of Cancún climate talks

The European Parliament  adopted today a Resolution which calls for more concerted action in climate aid commitments in the upcoming international talks in Cancun, Mexico (29 November - 10 December).

The Resolution stresses some of the key topics of the climate change policy as a focus of real progress in efforts related to UN climate talks.

The Resolution underlines a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 % by 2020 which is essential for the future sustainable economic growth of the European economy.

European Parliament calls for substantive steps at Cancún summit

The European Parliament has today called on Heads of State and Government worldwide to demonstrate real political leadership during the UN climate change negotiations which start next week and deplores the fact that there has not been more progress to date in preparing for the Cancún climate summit

Speaking from Strasbourg, GUE/NGL MEP Ms Bairbre de Brún, co-author of the resolution said:

The European Parliament today adopted a resolution on the situation in Western Sahara.

Verhofstadt: Europe is addressing the symptoms instead of the causes of the crisis in the eurozone

"The eurozone is going through turbulent times but Ireland is not the problem. Nor is Greece or Portugal. Of course these countries have a problem of credibility affecting their banks, their budget, or their trade balance. But elsewhere in the world there are also similar problems such as Japan (200%), the US or the UK but they have a credible economic governance and an image of unity," said Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament during today's debate in Strasbourg.
