AER tribute to Carlo Bernini

The Assembly of European Regions (AER) pays tribute to Carlo BERNINI who recently died after a long battle with illness.

Carlo Bernini invested himself throughout his life to the cause of defending regionalism, and in the field of transport policy. At a young age, Mr. Bernini began his involvement with Italian local and regional politics: he became President of Treviso (1970-1980) and afterwards President of the Veneto Region (1980-1989).

"The EPP Group in the European Parliament reaffirms its strong commitment to the protection of freedoms and rights, including the freedom of press. At the same time, it rejects all politically motivated accusations against the Hungarian government. The Commission is, rightfully, analysing the conformity of this law to the European legislation.

"If Europe is not to be outrun by other global actors, we must allocate more frequencies for mobile internet solutions. "We can no longer accept that the authoritarian regime of Belarus still takes advantage of being part of the Eastern Partnership which is designed to promote the Eastern neighbours of the European Union, while it still acts as a brutal dictatorship. The response of the Belarussian authorities to the demonstrations in the centre of Minsk on Election Day is unacceptable and must be followed by a proper response from the European Union.

Verhofstadt: "2011 must be a year for decisive action"

In his New Year message this evening in Brussels, Guy Verhofstadt states that 2011 must be the year when the Union shows leadership and decisive action.

"2010 has been a year of crisis for the EU, in particular for the euro but more broadly in the EU's inability to deal with it decisively which has resulted in market instability and a rise in euroscepticism.

Conversely, 2011 must be the year of action and decision; a credible strengthening of the Stability and Growth pact, the emergence of a eurobond market and genuine convergence of national economic policies.

ALDE Calls on Commission to clarify issue of US Government Wikileaks subpoenas

The ALDE group will examine tomorrow an Oral Question to the Commission on the US subpoenas in relation to Wikileaks and their conformity with EU data protection rules and ask for a debate in plenary on the issue.

The European Parliament's political response to the situation in Belarus in the aftermath of the presidential elections of 19 December 2010 will be discussed on Wednesday 12 January during an extraordinary meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in association with the Subcommittee on Human Rights, the Delegation for relations with Belarus and the Delegation to the EURONEST Parliamentary Assembly.
