Climate Action rests with the regions!

After a meeting in Brussels on January 13, AER President Michèle Sabban and the Commissioner for Climate Action Connie HEDEGAARD agreed the way forward to overcome the economic and ecological crisis

Michèle SABBAN, President of the Assembly of European Regions (AER) met this morning with EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie HEDEGAARD to report on the policies implemented by European regions in the fields of adaptation to climate change and energy.

European Parliament to debate EU dioxin scare

Following an initiative from the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats this week, Parliament's group leaders approved this morning an addition to the agenda next week in Strasbourg to allow for a debate with the European Commission on the state of play regarding the dioxin scare that is affecting animal feed stocks and consumer products in a number of Member States following an incident at a German processing plant at the end of December.

Data Breach Notifications in Europe - new EU Agency report

The EU’s ‘cyber security’ Agency ENISA, (the European Network and Information Security Agency) has today issued a report on Data Breach Notifications. The EU data breach notification (DBN) requirement for the electronic communications sector in the ePrivacy Directive (2002/58/EC) is vital to increase in the long term the level of data security in Europe. The Agency has reviewed the current situation and identified the key concerns of both the telecom operators and the Data Protection Authorities (DPA)s in its new report.

EP delegation holds crisis talks in Lisbon and Madrid

In turbulent times a delegation of the Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis (CRIS), lead by ALDE member and CRIS chairman Wolf KLINZ (FDP, Germany), is undertaking a long planned, but timely, journey to the capitals of Portugal and Spain. From Tuesday until this afternoon, the delegation that includes ALDE member Olle SCHMIDT (Folkpartiet, Sweden), has met representatives from both national parliaments as well as social and industrial partners, first in Lisbon now in Madrid.

ALDE recommends radical debate on long-term EU budget post 2013

Marking the start of 2011 which will hold a number of challenges for the EU, the ALDE group held a hearing on "Financing the European Union in times of austerity: towards a more independent source of revenue" to analyse the current system based primarily on national transfers and the options for change. At the same time the ALDE group is the first political group to outline its position paper, prepared by Carl Haglund (Svenska folkpartiet, Finland), in advance of proposals this year for the broad budget priorities of the Union, both in terms of revenue and expenditure.

The evaluation of the risks of GMOs for health and the environment has been the key controversy in the GMO debate in Europe. The work of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) GMO panel, has been criticised by Member States non-EFSA scientists and NGOs.
 
The ALDE group has taken the initiative to bring together EFSA and non EFSA experts on biosafety to discuss how the risk evaluation of GMOs should be conducted in a seminar which will be attended by John Dalli, EU Commissioner on Health and Consumer Policy.

Energy efficiency industries call for Heads of State and Government to agree upon a binding energy savings target

Industry leaders of household name companies, all involved in producing and developing products and services to make energy use significantly more efficient, have signed a joint letter to the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and all national Heads of State and Government pressing them to fully address energy savings in the upcoming European Energy Summit in Brussels on the 4th February 2011.

New standard for common mobile chargers Towards global relevance for smartphones compatible chargers

Brussels (11 January 2011) - A first step to benefit European consumers was achieved with the publication of a new standard for a common mobile charger, EN 62684, that was developed by CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, following a request from the European Commission. Consumers will not have to change charger anymore when buying a new phone even when from a different brand.
