“Innovation is crucial for a competitive and green economy” - GE unveils its 'Global Innovation Barometer’ - Compelling views from Brussels and the rest of the world

Brussels /Davos , 26 January 2011: GE (NYSE:GE) today published the results of its ‘Global Innovation Barometer’ - an independent survey of 1,000 senior business leaders across 12 countries.[1] The research, conducted by StrategyOne, examines the perceptions of respondents to the current drivers and deterrents to innovation and the role of innovation in addressing significant societal challenges and enhancing the quality of lives of citizens. Today's findings are comparable to a recent GE Barometer of key opinion leaders in the Brussels arena.

 

Global economic recovery is slipping away, say accountants

The global economic recovery, which has been slowing down in the past few months, has now gone into reverse, according to a worldwide survey of finance professionals by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

The results of ACCA’s Global Economic Conditions survey for the fourth quarter of 2010, show that twice the number of accountants as compared with the previous quarter (28% as opposed to 14%) believe that the recovery is slipping away.

ELDR appeals to Council of Europe for clear conclusions

“Without a clear conclusion from the Council of Europe on what happened in Kosovo in the direct aftermath of the armed conflict and before the international forces gained control of the area, it will be very difficult to establish reconciliation between the Albanian and Serbian communities of Kosovo,” commented ELDR President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP on the discussion in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe of the Marty report on the inhumane treatment of persons and illegal trafficking of human organs in Kosovo.

The European Commission today presented its 'flagship' communication on resource efficiency. The Greens welcomed the general rhetoric but expressed regret at the lack of clear targets. Commenting on the communication, Green MEP Bas Eickhout said:

Kosovo - Marty report - Full inquiry into allegations must be pursued; EULEX must have sufficient resources to do so

The Council of Europe today demanded a formal investigation into allegations of human rights abuses (including organ trafficking) by leading government politicians in Kosovo, as laid out in a report by rapporteur Dick Marty. The Greens have expressed concern about the allegations and called for a thorough investigation to be concluded without delay and for the COE to cooperate with the EU mission in Kosovo to this end. Green MEP Ulrike Lunacek, the European Parliament's draftsperson on Kosovo, said:

I would like to express my regret on the death and injury of protestors during the recent demonstration in Tirana and my condolences to the families of the deceased - said MEP  Nikolaos Chountis, European Parliament Rapporteur for Albania - . The circumstances that led to those deaths and injuries must be immediately investigated by the judiciary, without any obstacles or interventions, and responsibilities should be assigned duly.
