Egypt - EU must unequivocally condemn violence in Egypt and shift support to democratic transition

In the context of the violent repression of peaceful opposition protests and democratic restrictions by the Mubarak regime in Egypt, the Greens have condemned the ongoing violence and called on the EU to reverse its policy towards the Mubarak regime and support a peaceful democratic transformation. Commenting on the situation, and against the background of today's council of EU foreign ministers, Greens/EFA co-president Dany Cohn-Bendit said:

 

Supporting Egyptian people's struggle for freedom and justice

Recent events in Egypt, which have killed dozens of people, demonstrate the desire of the Egyptian people for democracy, freedom of speech and a regime change.

Through this widely observed movement, the Egyptian people call for social justice, economic measures to pull them out of poverty, to fend off hunger and an end to speculation on food prices and corruption by this regime which has been in place for 30 years.

EFET welcomes the temporary suspension of national registries to enhance their security, but urges for more attention to adverse market effects and clarification of the legal situation

The European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET)* welcomes the decision of the European Commission (EC) and EU Member States (MSs) on 19 January, 2011, to suspend national registries in response to recent security breaches. The large number of events involving unlawful access to registry accounts and theft of EU allowances (EUAs) in the week preceding the suspension confirmed the vulnerability of registry systems, first revealed by similar events that occurred in 2010.

Renewable energy - Commission backs-up national support schemes; must do more to put renewables at heart of EU energy strategy

The European Commission today adopted a communication on the progress in EU member states towards their renewable energy targets. The Greens welcomed that the Commission acknowledged national support schemes as the way forward for promoting renewables, but called for more to be done to support putting renewables at the heart of the EU's energy strategy. Commenting on the communication, Green energy spokesperson Claude Turmes said:

Just like their peers in other professions, young European scientists are facing difficult times when trying to establish their careers. The EU has made youth issues one of its priorities as part of the EU 2020 Strategy, in the form of the Youth on the Move initiative. The European Youth Day is a timely appointment to cast light on youth issues and to start a debate on how to guarantee a bright future for them.

Egypt: The European Union should show support for the democracy movement

Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament condemned the violent crackdown on Egyptians venting their frustration at decades of repression and lack of political freedom:
"Egyptians have found their collective voice and are calling for an end to the dictatorship following the recent protests in Tunisia which ended the authoritarian rule of Ben Ali.  In both cases, beating or killing those demonstrating for their liberty and democracy will only strengthen their perseverance.

European Council: No concrete proposals to address attacks on Christians. Elmar Brok MEP and Mario Mauro MEP

Mario Mauro and Elmar Brok, promoters in the European Parliament of the Resolution on attacks against Christian communities, are astonished that the draft document released by the Council on intolerance, discrimination and violence on the basis of religion or belief  "never even mentions Christians".

 

Furthermore, they "are astonished that the Council document fails to take in consideration any of the proposals made by the European Parliament through its Resolution approved with a large majority during last plenary session".
