Europe´s growing pile of e-waste

Household appliances, such as computers, mobile phones, fridges, microwaves, irons and other consumer gadgets, constitute one of the fastest growing electric and electronic waste streams in the European Union. This type of waste poses a series of challenges such as health problems if the waste is not properly treated and a waste of raw materials if there is no recycling. 

EU financial authority chairs - Inauspicious start for EU financial supervision authorities as EP confirms chair candidates

The European Parliament today endorsed (1) the three candidates to chair the new EU financial supervision authorities (2) after resolutions on their rejection were not adopted. The Greens expressed concern with the selection process, as well as with the suitability of one of the candidates. Speaking after the vote, Green MEP Sven Giegold, who was the EP draftsman for the European Securities and Markets Authority, said:

                          

Electronic waste (WEEE) EP votes to tighten EU rules on waste electric and electronic goods

The European Parliament today voted to revise EU legislation on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The Greens welcomed the vote, which will tighten up the requirements and should close some of the loopholes that have led to problems with the implementation of the rules. After the vote, Green MEP Michail Tremopoulos said:

The EP plenary vote on the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Directive: SOME PROGRESS BUT AN OPPORTUNITY MISSED

In reaction to today’s European Parliament plenary vote, CECED notes some progress to improve the Directive. MEPs have however missed one central issue: the need for the revised legislation to cover all WEEE, and not only the WEEE that producers take care of. Today approximately 2/3 of the WEEE is not handled by producers and falls outside the treatment requirements of the Directive. 

EU banana regime EP votes against the interests of small banana producers by endorsing change in banana regime

The European Parliament today voted to endorse an agreement reached in the WTO aimed at ending the long-running dispute on the EU's banana regime. The Greens opposed the agreement, which is against the interests of small producers and developing countries. After the vote, Green MEP Catherine Greze said:

A delegation* of 9 MEPs from the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Group in the European Parliament is travelling to Dakar this weekend to take part in the World Social Forum 2011 to be held in Senegal from February 6 to 11.

WTO Banana Agreement: EP gives green light to global deal. Laima Andrikienė MEP

"The European Parliament has finally given its consent to this very important deal which will bring an almost 20-year old international trade dispute to an end", said Laima Andrikienė MEP, EPP Group Spokeswoman on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Banana Agreement.

The global banana deal reached within the WTO last year was voted in the European Parliament today. This Agreement will oblige the EU to lower tariffs for imported bananas from Latin American countries from the current level of €176 per tonne to €114 per tonne before 2017.

European Supervisory Authorities: European Parliament satisfied with assurances received from Commission and Council. Jean-Paul Gauzès MEP

"The European Parliament has received clear assurances from the Hungarian Presidency of the Council and from the European Commission which dispel doubts as to allocated resources and the autonomy of the new three European Supervisory Authorities of the financial sector", said Jean-Paul Gauzès MEP, EPP Group Spokesman on Economic and Monetary Affairs on Thursday.

Agreement on Trade in Bananas will take small producers hostage

Following the plenary vote on the agreement on trade in bananas, Elie Hoarau MEP (France) said:

"The fact that demonstrators and counter-demonstrators were allowed to confront each other and come into contact with each other, and allegations that the counter-demonstration was well orchestrated and organised by people representing the authorities, constitutes an extremely deplorable situation, which has to end at once", said Ioannis Kasoulides MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.
