Media freedom and EU coverage: related challenges?

Fondation EurActiv PoliTech is launching a blog debate today and planning a stakeholder workshop in June on media freedom and independent journalism. Both initiatives are intended to discuss how – and how frequently – journalists cover EU policy debates. The debate is hosted on www.blogactiv.eu, the social media platform dedicated to EU policies.
 

European businesses lament lack of ambition of EU Energy Efficiency Plan 2011

Industry is deeply concerned by the release of the European Commission’s Energy
Efficiency Plan 2011. Although it is clear and publicly acknowledged that the 2020 energy savings target will not be met by current measures in place in Member States, Brussels is delaying taking concrete action until at least 2013.

Commission proposals would set EU on the wrong road for climate policy to 2050

The European Commission today presented a low carbon roadmap, aimed at plotting EU climate change policy up to 2050. The Greens are disappointed with the proposals, which are not compatible with the EU's responsibilities for tackling climate change and limiting the increase in global temperatures to below 2°C. Commenting on the roadmap, Green MEP and EP draftsman (rapporteur) for strengthening the EU's 2020 greenhouse gas target Bas Eickhout said:

Commission proposes 'plan' for inaction on energy efficiency in EU

The European Commission today adopted an energy efficiency plan, with a view to outlining how the EU target of reducing energy consumption 20% by 2020 can be achieved. The Greens have criticised the 'plan', which fails to present any decisive action on energy efficiency. Commenting on the plan, Green energy spokesperson Claude Turmes said:

International Women's Day - EU must do more to tackle inequality

On International Women's Day (Tuesday 8 March) MEPs Jill Evans (Wales) and Frieda Brepoels (Flanders) are calling for more focussed action at EU level to tackle inequality and eliminate poverty.

The European Parliament in Strasbourg held a special debate to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day.

MEPs discussed the ongoing need to close the gender pay gap and raise the number of women in employment. Parliamentarians also heard that 17% of all women in the EU continue to live in poverty.

Jill Evans MEP (Plaid Cymru), President of the EFA Group said:

"What lesson should we learn from the financial crisis if it is not that our Member States must stop considering cooperation in the budgetary, fiscal and social fields as taboo?", said the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

"This is what the competitiveness pact - the original version of which has been reviewed to make it more in line with the Community Method, as I hoped for - rightly suggests", continued Joseph Daul.

Facing the cyber-zombies – EU agency gets tough on Botnets

The EU’s ‘cyber security’ Agency, ENISA today published a comprehensive study on the botnet threat (networks of ordinary computers controlled by cybercriminals),and how to address it. The report looks at the reliability of botnet size estimates and makes recommendations for all groups involved in the fight against botnets. Alongside the main report the Agency sets out the top 10 key issues for policymakers in- ‘Botnets:10 Tough Questions’
