The Conservative majority in the European Parliament today voted against the principle of equal treatment for all workers in the EU. Despite Socialist efforts to include key provisions, the Conservatives decided to vote against giving equal rights to migrant workers on pensions, social security and the EU’s ‘posted’ worker’ law.

The vote was on the ‘Single-Permit’ package, which is designed to speed up the EU work permit process.

"Today's vote on the guidelines laid the foundations for the beginning of the procedure that will lead to the approval of the 2012 European Budget", said Giovanni La Via, EPP Group shadow Rapporteur on the 2012 EU Budget.

The EPP Group expressed its support from the start for a preliminary Report to be submitted to the Commission, which would contain an indication of the Parliament's priorities for the next budget, as the Council has already done.

Ahead of the European Council summit, the Party of European Socialists (PES) today (24 March) joined thousands of demonstrators protesting against the proposed economic direction of the EU.

The demo against the failed policies of the conservative majority followed on from the strongly worded statement by PES Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers, ahead of the Council.

Single work permit - Far-from-perfect outcome but a step forward for rights for third country nationals in the EU

The European Parliament today voted in favour of new EU rules creating a single EU work and residence permit. While regretting that the adopted text contains a number of flaws, the Greens believe the proposals will nonetheless represent a step forward for the rights of third country nationals. European health professionals call for non-discriminatory access to healthcare

On 22 March, the European Declaration of health professionals was presented in the European Parliament by Médecins du Monde, the Standing Committee of European Doctors and supporting MEPs Dr Antonyia Parvanova and Ms Edite Estrela to the Hungarian presidency. They urged EU institutions and Member States to take action to allow health professionals to respect the medical ethical obligations when providing care to every patient, especially undocumented migrants.

 

Single permit: MEPs miss chance to reject exploitation and defend workers rights

Calling today's vote on a single permit a "missed opportunity", GUE/NGL MEPs Cornelia Ernst and Patrick Le Hyaric regretted the passing of a text that promotes the exploitation of migrant workers and undermines labour rights.

 

"Today's vote on the Mathieu report could have been used to establish EU-wide rules for labour migration for immigrants from outside the union that could have been based upon equal rights and equal treatment" Ernst said.

 

EGBA concerned at EC Green Paper on online gambling

   The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) welcomes today’s publication of the Green Paper on online gambling that will allow for a factual discussion at EU level. At the same time, the EGBA expresses its concern with the apparent lack of commitment to curb further fragmentation of the common market and ensure that consumers throughout the EU enjoy consistent standards of regulated, safe and high-quality products.
