Biodiversity - Absence of new ideas in EU strategy on halting biodiversity loss

The European Commission today presented an EU strategy* aimed at fulfilling the EU goal of halting biodiversity loss by 2020, agreed by EU leaders last year. The Greens expressed regret that the strategy offers few concrete commitments for achieving this goal and sub-targets that are inconsistent with the overall goals. Commenting on the strategy, Green MEP Bas Eickhout said:

Thirty executives representing some of Europe‟s leading energy efficiency companies and organisations published last week an open letter to EU Member State energy ministers urging them to refocus Europe‟s energy policy on promoting the energy efficiency of buildings. The letter was published in Le Monde (FR), Financial Times (UK), Berlingske Tidende (DK), Handelsblatt (D), and the European Voice (EU).

Party of European Socialists (PES) President, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen today gave strong support to representatives of the ‘Arab Spring’. Speaking in Tunis, at a PES organised conference, he urged the European Union to “act now and act together” in supporting democracy in North Africa and the Middle East.

On average 11.7% of pregnant women are willing to store their child’s
cord blood stem cells in a private bank, according to a study that was published in the recognized Journal
Transfusion1 and that analyzed attitudes towards cord blood storage in 5 EU countries. In practice in Europe
