Nuclear safety tests No stress for nuclear industry, as tests set to fall short in key safety areas

Agreement on the content of the proposed EU nuclear stress tests was officially announced this morning by EU energy commissioner Oettinger. The Greens are concerned that the tests will fall short of testing the safety in crucial areas in spite of earlier promises by commissioner Oettinger. Commenting on the agreement Greens/EFA co-president Rebecca Harms said:

Neighbourhood policy Review points right direction for neighbourhood policy but many questions remain

 

A review of the EU's Neighbourhood Policy was presented today by the European Commission and the EU's foreign policy high representative at a crucial moment for the EU's neighbouring countries in the North Africa and Mediterranean region. The Greens have long called for a fundamental review of the ENP and welcomed the direction of the Commission's proposals but highlighted that many questions remain. Commenting on the proposals, Green foreign affairs spokesperson Franziska Brantner said:

Russia - Khodorkovsky trial New ruling, same old politically-motivated outcome

 

A court in Moscow today issued its ruling in the appeal case of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev, upholding their second conviction but reducing the sentence of Khodorkovsky by one year. The Greens hit out at the ruling as politically-motivated and called on the EU to raise the issue at its forthcoming summit with Russia (10-11 June). Commenting on the ruling, Green MEP and chair of the EP sub-committee on human rights Heidi Hautala said:

 

MEPs vote for greater consumer protection under EU rules on deposit guarantees

The EP economic affairs committee today voted on revised EU rules on deposit guarantee schemes. The Greens welcomed the vote, which will give greater protection for consumers in the EU. After the vote, Green MEP and shadow draftsman Sven Giegold said:

Portable Batteries and Standardization in Europe: Cooperation Agreement between CENELEC and EPBA

EPBA, the European Portable Battery Association, and CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization signed a Cooperation Agreement. The objective of this agreement is to push forward the elaboration of a feasibility study of standardization activities (at European and international level) in the area of batteries and accumulators technology.
EPBA Secretary General, Mr Hans Craen, warmly welcomed the new cooperation, predicting a profitable outcome for all stakeholders for several reasons:

JEC Consortium publishes study on biofuels

EUCAR and its partners in the JEC Consortium today published the final report of the JEC Biofuels Programme: “EU renewable energy targets in 2020: Analysis of scenarios for transport”. The JEC Consortium comprises the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, EUCAR (the European Council for Automotive R&D) and CONCAWE (the oil companies' European association for environment, health and safety in refining and distribution).
