“Let the statistics do the talking – EMF publishes Q4 2010”

2010 in figures – the publication of the EMF’s Quarterly Review for Q4 complete and complement the preceding quarters, bringing the EMF’s statistics on EU mortgage markets to their annual conclusion, and presenting us with an outlook for 2011. With in-depth commentary on the latest trends in mortgage and housing markets and a comprehensive set of quarterly data, year-end 2010 figures reveal that the trends already observed in Q1, Q2 and Q3 2010 are sustained.

TRAN Committee of European Parliament has transformed the Eurovignette into a pure new tax, penalising EU employment without greening road transport

The non-mandatory earmarking of the revenues from the Eurovignette aimed at greening road transport at-source, as decided by the EP TRAN Committee, will turn the Directive into a pure additional tax on the already heavily taxed road transport services, which will severely penalise the EU competitiveness, economy and employment with no environmental benefits.

 

PES welcomes Serbia’s detention of war criminal Mladić

War criminal Ratko Mladić has been arrested in the province of Vojvodina, in northern Serbia today. Both Mladic and Radovan Karadžić, his political master, were indicted by UN war crimes tribunal for war crimes in 1995. Mladić was accused of genocide and other crimes against humanity - including the massacre of at least 7,500 Muslim men and boys from the town of Srebrenica in 1995. Along with Mr Karadzic, he became a symbol of the Serb campaign of ethnic cleansing of Croats and Muslims and was one of the most wanted suspects from the Bosnia conflict.

Caritas Calls on EU Governments to Guarantee Reception and Fair Treatment of Those Fleeing the Middle East and North Africa

The Regional Conference of all the Caritas organisations in Europe, gathering in Rome on the 26th of May, in the light of the crisis in the Mediterranean region, calls upon the governments to guarantee the reception and fair treatment of those fleeing from the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

European Commission asks EFSA to see whether aspartame is safe for use

Results of a study on 60,000 pregnant women carried out by Danish researcher Thorhallur Halldorsson earlier this year demonstrated that there is a link between pregnant women drinking fizzy drinks using the artificial sweetener aspartame and the incidence of premature childbirth. New evidence that aspartame increases the risk of cancer was also revealed by Italian oncologist Morando Soffritti, who signalled an increased risk of liver and lung cancer in mice exposed to the chemical sweetener throughout their lives.
