OPTA Sees No Reason to Regulate TV market

“OPTA made a decision today which reflects market realities.  After thorough economic analysis of the fast accelerating digitisation and increasing convergence in the TV sector, OPTA has proposed to no longer impose regulatory obligations on the cable companies UPC and Ziggo, an example of better regulation. This is part of an encouraging trend as the European Commission has recently expressed concerns regarding Belgian regulators attempts to impose rules on an evolving TV market.”

EuroACE says Energy Efficiency Directive in need of deep renovation

EuroACE, the European association representing companies in the energy efficiency in buildings sector, cautiously welcomes the Commission’s publication of the Energy Efficiency Directive. However, EuroACE is concerned about the lack of long term strategic vision in the proposals.

EuroACE spokesperson Julie Todisco said ‘EuroACE does not believe that this is a basis to reach the 20% energy saving target by 2020 and does not form a foundation to address the complete renovation of Europe’s building stock by 2050’.

The proposed Directive on Energy Efficiency, another missed opportunity to improve Europe’s energy efficiency

The European Building Automation and Controls Association (eu.bac)1 welcomes today’s adoption by
the European Commission of the Proposal for a Directive on Energy Efficiency (COM(2011) 370
final), even if it only represents a small step towards an energy-efficient Europe.
eu.bac regrets the proposed merger of Directive 2006/32/EC2 and of Directive 2004/8/EC3 into a
single Directive. “We are not convinced by this merger. Interestingly, the most effective instruments

The Party of European Socialists (PES) can announce that over 1000 Socialist and Social Democratic Members of National Parliaments have signed up to a call for a European Tax on speculation. “As a way of showing just how clear the difference is between a Conservative Europe and a Progressive Europe, there could not be a better, clearer and stronger message”. So said PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.

Europeans voice dramatic loss (-51%) of trust in governments across Europe after two years of economic crisis – but trust in the European Commission and European Parliament falls by much less.

Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations and communications firm, today launched the first European Trust & Purpose survey which reveals that the economic crisis and banking excesses continue to significantly undermine trust in governments, businesses and their CEOs.  Trust in multinational companies has decreased by 36% over the past two years and trust in CEOs has decreased by almost 50% during the same period.

Energy efficiency directive: Commission misses crucial opportunity

Today, the European Commission presented the draft Energy Efficiency Directive which should allow
the EU to meet its 20 % energy savings target by 2020. The proposal is however unlikely to allow this
crucial target to be met and even falls behind the measures announced in the Energy Efficiency Plan.
The directive invites the Commission to assess by 30th June 2014 whether Member States are on track
to meeting the 20 % target. Experts agree that corrective measures implemented at that stage would
