EU Parliament Committee does not challenge European Commission’s proposal on SEPA migration Regulation

On 11 July the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee did not challenge the European Commission’s December 2010 proposal for a SEPA migration Regulation. The Committee rejected most of the many amendments submitted by Members of the European Parliament. These amendments were aimed at enhancing a proposal which combines the necessary setting of end dates for existing national credit transfer and direct debit schemes with minute technical arrangements and far-reaching policy orientations.

Key challenges for EU fisheries not solved under Commission's timid proposals

The European Commission today presented long-awaited proposals on reforming the EU's Common Fisheries Policy. The Greens believe the communication does not properly address the core challenges facing EU fisheries, notably by failing to set environmental sustainability as the underlying goal of the CFP and by proposing a market-based system for the right to fish, which treats fish as commodities, rather than a common good.

The European Commission today presented proposals on a European finance tracking system to monitor EU bank transfer details. The proposal follows on from the controversy surrounding the transfer of EU bank transaction details under the SWIFT system to the US for analysis, supposedly under the guise of combating terrorism. Migration: giving Europe the Frontex it needs. Simon Busuttil MEP

The European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) today approved a new law granting Frontex a renewed mandate with more resources and tools at its disposal.

Today's vote is the LIBE Committee's stamp of approval to an agreement reached by the EP Rapporteur, Simon Busuttil MEP, with the Council of Ministers after six trialogue meetings.

After the vote, Simon Busuttil said: "We have done our part. Frontex will be up to the task. It will cater for Europe's needs."
