Tar sands - Commission proposal to clamp down on fuel from environment-damaging tar sands welcomed

The European Commission today presented proposals to account for the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from oil from tar sands (1), which would effectively rule out imports of this environmentally-damaging fuel source. ACTA anti-counterfeiting agreement - New study underlines rights concerns with ACTA, strengthens calls for deal to be scrapped

A new study on the compatibility of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) with the European Convention on Human Rights and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, commissioned by the Greens/EFA group, was presented in the European Parliament today. The study underlines concerns that the ACTA agreement violates fundamental rights, strengthening the arguments of the Greens and others that are calling for the agreement to be scrapped. Speaking at the launch, Green MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht said:

Waste electric and electronic goods (WEEE) Tougher EU rules a step closer after EP vote

The European Parliament environment committee today voted on a proposal to revise EU rules on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) (1). The Greens welcome the moves to increase the scope and collection targets and to tighten important loopholes with regard to shipments to non-OECD countries.
