EHFG 2011: Staying at work with a chronic disability

The Swiss Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society described at the European Health Forum Gastein pioneering methods for employers to retain workers with MS, an illness that affects 500,000 people across Europe and costs €15bn annually in direct and indirect costs. Tailor-made case management had been a signal success in a pilot project at Ford-Werke Deutschland, where 500 workers with chronic disability have been reintegrated in the workforce. A pilot project for associates with MS at Novartis AG, Switzerland, is ongoing.

A pioneering project called INTERLINKS aims to improve long-term care for older people, experts reported today at the European Health Forum Gastein. One pilot project has already shown that satisfaction can be improved while cutting costs by 50%. 

EHFG 2011: Experts address “vaccine confidence gap”

The Internet and social media are proving a serious nuisance by spreading unfounded scare-stories about vaccines, the European Health Forum Gastein was told by vaccine expert Dr Heidi Larson. The consequences could be alarming. One was the return of measles, with the WHO posting 25,000 new cases in September 2011. Public trust in vaccines is highly variable, experts said, this needed to be addressed by decision makers. 

Demographic change in Europe “a ticking time-bomb”

The continuing impact of demographic change on health and finance cannot be overestimated, experts told the European Health Forum Gastein. The ageing of the population  meant a constant increase in cases of cancer and diabetes and of many other age-associated diseases. “This will result in major funding problems, which is likely to have a significant impact on healthcare delivery and the European economy as whole“, said Prof. Peter Boyle. “Tackling this challenge should be Europe’s top priority.

CEN sustainable building standards prevent sustainable solutions

ANEC urges the European Commission not to support or recognise the CEN standards for sustainable buildings[1] now under development. These standards are methodologically flawed and not focused on the essentials. They even go against established building schemes and will be very cost-intensive to implement.  Finally, they will be of little value to consumers, if at all.
