During a conference organised yesterday by EurActiv Italia in Rome, Mario Monti, Emma Bonino and Antonio Tajani spoke up to give Italy a stronger voice in a crisis-riven Europe.

This week, on 19 and 20 October EFIB is set to provide a snapshot of what has been achieved in the field of industrial biotech and the bio-based economy over the past year and to highlight the most important opportunities and challenges in the pipeline.

The Conference, which this year will attract over 350 participants, has since 2008, established itself as the meeting place for policy and business and, year upon year has provided a fertile ground for lively debate and constructive discussion on the development of the bio-based economy.

Human Embryos: European Court of Justice rules out patenting of embryos. Peter Liese MEP

Today, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) decided that human embryos and cells generated from them must not be patented. The EPP Group in the European Parliament welcomes this decision. "It has been very important throughout for the European Parliament to clearly define ethically-motivated boundaries in the Directive on Biotechnological Inventions. It is very good news that the ECJ has now ruled accordingly.

Data privacy (PNR) - Fundamental rights concerns ignored as hypocritical MEPs endorse EU-Australia PNR deal

The European Parliament civil liberties committee today voted to endorse a proposed EU-Australia agreement on the retention of passenger data (PNR). The Greens have hit out at the vote to endorse the agreement despite the fact that the deal fails to address fundamental rights concerns repeatedly raised by the European Parliament. After the vote, Green home affairs spokesperson Jan Philipp Albrecht said:

World Food Day: Europe’s agricultural productivity must increase to meet growing global demand

European agricultural productivity has increased by less than 1 per cent in the past year, yet world demand is growing by at least 3-4 per cent each year, and it is predicted to increase by 70% by 2050.  Europe currently utilises over 30 million hectares – the size of Germany – outside its borders to meet its own needs, which some academics have called a ‘virtual land grab.’
