Railway recast signals bad news for integrated public rail companies

GUE/NGL MEP Sabine Wils said today's European Parliament vote on the establishment of a single European rail area "paves the way for private profiteering in Europe's railway sector".

With possibilities opened up for privatization of marshalling yards, maintenance facilities, operating services and subcontracting, the notion of integrated public railway companies where safety rules are paramount has been destroyed.

A reversal of thinking and approach is required!

Responding to statements by Presidents Van Rompuy, Barroso and Juncker on economic governance in the European Parliament this morning, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky said markets remained unaffected by the decisions of the last EU summit and warned that speculators had "the next eurozone country in their sights".

On the five proposals announced by President Barroso to reinforce economic policy coordination, he asked: "do you have the courage and ability to stand up to the financial sector and prevent future waves of speculation?

Europe lights up to reduce cigarette-ignited fires

ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardisation, welcomes that as of tomorrow (Thursday), tobacco manufacturers are required to produce and market only reduced-ignition propensity cigarettes in the EU.

The European Commission estimates that each year, a minimum of 1,000 fatalities are caused by cigarettes left unattended. Fire safety measures introduced in Canada, several states in the USA and also in Finland since 2010, show that accidental fire deaths have fallen dramatically since the introduction of such measures.

Now it is time for the financial transaction tax

“Since the collapse of the Lehman Brothers we have been talking about introducing a financial transaction tax. However, talk is cheap when it comes to solving the problems of the financial markets and government debt”, said CESI President Peter Heesen on 14th November in Brussels. At its meeting today, the CESI Board made an urgent appeal to the national governments to finally introduce this tax at the European level. Earnings from this tax are to be used to reduce government debt.

During today's discussion on the Commission's work programme for 2012 in the European Parliament, GUE/NGL MEP Patrick Le Hyaric criticised President Barroso "for not taking into account the extreme seriousness of the current crisis and the fact that European people are rejecting the EU because of the lack of solidarity."

By voting massively in favour of this report, MEPs have taken a strong position in favour of a controlled opening of the online gambling market. "While underlining that this decision remains in the hands of Member States, the European Parliament cites the French model as an example," said Damien Abad, EPP Group Spokesperson on the dossier, on Tuesday, welcoming the result.

"We are pleading for a national licensing model to be the rule if Member States decide to open up their markets to competition," Damien Abad explained.
