Horizon 2020: FoodDrinkEurope calls for a more innovation friendly environment in Europe

(Brussels, 30 November 2011) FoodDrinkEurope welcomes Horizon 2020 – the future Framework Programme for Research and Innovation – and trusts it will engender R&D and innovation in Europe and among its food and drink industry, the largest manufacturing industry in the EU.

Following the publication today by the European Commission under the aegis of DG Research and Innovation, FoodDrinkEurope looks to Horizon 2020 to build on current successes, promoting a mechanism which will deliver a more business and research-friendly framework for the sector.

HIV cases continue to rise in Europe: WHO European Region launches new action plan to bring the epidemic under control

The HIV epidemic is still not under control, according to a new surveillance report issued today. Over 118 000 cases of HIV were diagnosed in Europe in 2010, according to new data from 51 of the 53 of Member States in the WHO European Region, which were released today by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).  Over three quarters of newly reported infections were from the eastern part of the Region.

EU audit rules - Intense lobbying to water down Commission proposals underline need for tougher regulation

The European Commission today adopted proposals aimed at strengthening EU rules governing the auditing sector. The Greens expressed regret that the final proposals were considerably watered-down compared with earlier drafts, and pledged to work to strengthen the proposals during the legislative process. Commenting on the proposals, Green financial spokesperson Sven Giegold said:

Supporting women leading international peace and equality movements.

"Women are taking a lead in the struggles for peace and justice," said Mikael Gustafsson, chair of the Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee in the European Parliament, opening a conference on women and peace this morning.

For Ilda Figueiredo, GUE/NGL coordinator on the Committee, "it is important keep in mind that democracy, gender equality and social justice are necessary prerequisites for sustainable peace".

GUE/NGL MEPs contact US authorities to protest treatment of jailed army whistleblower

Expressing deep concern over the treatment of US soldier and whistleblower Bradley Manning in custody, GUE/NGL MEPs today co-signed a letter with over 50 representatives from all major European parliamentary groups addressed to US authorities, including President Obama.

Manning was arrested in May 2010 in Iraq on suspicion of having passed restricted material pertaining to possible US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan to the website Wikileaks and concerns have been raised about alleged human rights violations against him.

Horizon 2020: Biotechnology to play a major role in meeting European ‘Grand Challenges’

Today the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 launch named biotechnology as one of the six enabling technologies that can boost the European economy, ensuring that the EU remains sustainable, globally competitive and a centre for excellence in science. Horizon 2020 - the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation- also outlines the most prevalent Grand Challenges that EU research and Innovation policy should tackle.
